5.3.7 Seam strength test. The breaking strength of the heat sealed seams shall be not less than 16
pounds when tested in accordance with Method A of ASTM D 882. Each specimen shall be cut 1 inch
by 6 inches from a finished case with the seam approximately in the middle and parallel to the short
sides of the specimen. The gage marks need not be applied and the elongation need not be measured.
The initial separation between the grips of the apparatus shall be 2 inches and the specimen shall be
placed in grips with the seam equidistant between the grips. The strength of the seam reported in
pounds to the nearest 0.1 pound shall be the average of 5 determinations per sample unit.
5.3.8 Leakage Test. The case shall be marked 5 inches from the inside of the seam and filled with
water to the mark. The temperature of the water shall be 73.5 +/- 2 degrees F. The case shall then be
suspended over a dry receptacle for a period of 3 hours. At the end of the 3 hour period, the case shall
be examined for seam separation and leakage of the water into the receptacle.
6.0 Packaging.
Preservation, Packaging and Marking. Cases of one size only shall be packed in accordance with
ASTM D 3951 except that twenty (20) size 1 or ten (10) size 2 cases in each container.
